One interesting fact about this location is being witness to changes in the history of Amsterdam. It withstood the dark stage of military power and is now considered to be a tourist hub. Dam square is recommended for people who are tired of the hustle and bustle in life and would just want to relax and experience tranquility.

The Birth of Dam Square

The Dam Square is a real dam located in Amstel River. This is where the city's name was derived. This dam was built initially in 1270 and through constant construction, grew eventually large enough for a town square. The total area covering the Dam square is a combination of the real dam plus the Plaetse, or the plaza adjacent to it. The river on Amstel was filled in around the 19th century which explains why the Dam square now is primarily surrounded by land instead of water.
