The Canals

Some canals in Amsterdam were made for residential development. These include the Prince’s Canal, Emperor’s canal and Gentleman’s Canal collectively known as Grachtengordel. These were built in the Dutch Golden Age that directly leads to the city. It is famously tagged the Venice of the North. The construction of the canals stretches from west to east which appearance is likened to a giant windshield wiper.  Some of other notable canals are the Singel which encircles the city in 1585; the Zwanenburgwal which is situated in the center of the city of Amsterdam; the Brouwersgracht which is dubbed the most beautiful canal and the Kloveniersburgwal which is close to the Dutch East India Company.

Climate and Economy in Amsterdam

The Amsterdam has a moderate climate influenced by the North Sea due to its proximity to the city. Winter season is mild, summer weather is warm and occasional storm maybe experienced.  October to March are cooler months which are mostly cloudy. 

The City of Amsterdam is the business and financial capital of Netherlands. Most Dutch corporation’s headquarters can be located in Amsterdam. Among them are Cisco Systems, ING Group, TomTom and others. Now a part of Euronext, the Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the most important and oldest stock exchange in Europe.
